What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry provides a variety of solutions that allow patients with dental anxiety and dental phobias to relax. At Plain City Family Dental, we practice gentle dentistry. Our sedation dentist in Plain City, Dr. Peter Mortenson is trained in the delivery of a variety of sedation methods and will work closely with you to choose the one that best suits your unique needs. Whether you want to “take the edge off” or prefer dozing through your appointment (with little to no memory of your procedure), we have an option that is perfect for you.

Levels of Sedation

When choosing a sedation method, it is good to know the levels of sedation that can be reached:

  • Minimal Sedation

This is the lowest level of sedation; you feel deeply relaxed but are awake and aware.

  • Moderate Sedation/Conscious Sedation

This is a deeper level of sedation that may cause you to slur your words and have delayed reaction times. You may not remember your treatment clearly.

  • Deep Sedation

This is the deepest level of conscious sedation; you may be on the edge of sleep or you may snooze, but you can still be awakened.

  • General Anesthesia

You will sleep through your treatment; you’ll be unable to be awakened until after the procedure.

Types of Sedation

We offer several sedation options. Dr. Peter Mortenson will meet with you to decide which one is best for you.

  • Nitrous Oxide

Sometimes called "Laughing gas", this is a gas that you breathe through your nose. It typically does not put you to sleep, but it does reduce feelings of anxiety and make you feel very relaxed. This is a great option for someone who feels just a bit nervous but wants to be awake and aware during the procedure.

  • Oral Conscious Sedation

We sometimes call this a "Sleepy Pill." Dr. Mortenson will give you a prescription for Halcion, a very safe sedative that you will take one hour prior to your appointment and as soon as you arrive at your appointment. During the procedure, you will be barely awake and extremely relaxed. An assistant will be monitoring you at all times to keep you comfortable and safe. The next day, you will have no memory of the 2-3 hours you were sedated for. This option is for adults only.

  • IV Sedation or General Anesthesia:

This is the best option for patients who wish to be completely asleep during dental procedures. We bring a highly trained anesthesiologist to our practice to sedate you as they would for any regular surgery or procedure at the hospital. They will monitor your health at all times while we perform the dentistry you need. This option works well for kids and adults with high anxiety who otherwise could not receive dental care.
